Still, there are a few cases where extracting a tooth becomes necessary. Gone are the days when dental extraction used to be a painful procedure. At Metro Dental, we perform painless dental extractions in a calm and relaxing environment.

Tooth Extraction May Become Necessary In The Following Cases:

Grossly Damaged Tooth – a tooth may need to be extracted multiple attempts at saving it through a root canal procedure are not successful.

Orthodontic Purposes – We may also recommend extraction of one or more teeth in a jaw to create room for the alignment of teeth during orthodontic treatment.

Impacted Teeth – if the soft tissue surrounding impacted teeth frequently gets inflamed, then we recommend that the impacted tooth should be extracted.

Supernumerary Teeth – excessive, or supernumerary teeth need to be extracted as they create the problem in oral hygiene maintenance, eating, and speech.
How is Dental Extraction Performed?

Pre-Extraction – First, the Doctor will look at digital x-rays of your affected tooth to evaluate the extent of damage and to visualize any important structures which are to be preserved during the surgery. Next, she will administer local anesthesia to make you completely free of pain.

The Extraction Procedure – Once we are sure that the effect of the anesthetic has kicked in, we will use an elevator to remove the fibers which attach your teeth to your jaw bone and gums Next, the doctor will use another elevator to gradually make the tooth mobile in its socket. When the tooth has become sufficiently mobile, it will be extracted by using suitable forceps and applying an outward force.

Post-Extraction – Once the tooth is removed, the doctor will wash the socket with saline or distilled water to remove debris. Finally, the socket will be squeezed, and you will be asked to bite on a clean gauze. This is done to stop bleeding and to promote clot formation.

Surgical Extraction - In some cases, teeth are so grossly damaged, or they have such an angulation or position that normal extraction is not possible. In these cases, a surgical extraction is performed. The procedure for surgical extraction is similar except that the doctor will make an incision over the soft tissue surrounding the tooth and expose the underlying bone. She will then grind the jaw bone just enough to allow her to grip the tooth firmly for extraction. Sometimes, a tooth may need to be sectioned in two halves for easier extraction. Once the tooth is taken out, the socket is squeezed, and the soft tissue is sutured back into position.
