Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are cap-shaped, non-removable structures which sit on the visible part of the tooth structure. They are used for hiding cosmetic tooth defects, and restoring structure and function of damaged teeth.

Who can Benefit from Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are ideal for treating the following aesthetic and functional dental problems:

  • Grossly Damaged Teeth – whether your teeth were damaged because of cavities or due to trauma, dental crowns can be used to reinforce them and restore the aesthetics.

  • Teeth Stains – dental crowns are also an excellent option for masking permanent teeth stains which cannot be removed with professional whitening procedures.

  • Heavily Filled Teeth – heavily filled teeth are at a higher risk of fracturing under the weight of the filling material. To prevent spontaneous fracture of these teeth, you Metro Dental dentist recommends that these teeth should be restored with dental crowns.

  • After Root Canal Treatment – after a root canal treatment, teeth become weak and fragile. Therefore, these teeth should be reinforced with dental crowns as soon as the healing of the surgical site has taken place.

How are Crowns Prepared?

During your first visit, your dentist will perform a detailed clinical examination. She will also look at x-ray image of your teeth to assess the extent of the damage. During your next appointment, your dentist will remove a thin layer of the affected tooth to shape it so that it can receive the crown. She will then make impressions of your teeth and send them to the laboratory.

While your crown is being prepared, your dentist will place a temporary crown to restore the aesthetics. During the next appointment, your dentist will try the prepared crown on the tooth without bonding it. If everything goes well during the try-in stage, she will permanently attach the crown to the prepared tooth with adhesive cement. That’s it. Say hello to a beautiful smile.
